The RE Council would like to extend congratulations to Little Heath School, a special school in Redbridge, after it was placed first in this year’s Accord Inclusivity Award, run by the Accord Coalition. This is the first time a special school has been granted the award in its four year history.
The award was implemented in order to recognise and reward schools which do the most to promote an ethos of inclusion and the growth of mutual understanding.
The winning school, Little Heath, was highly commended for demonstrating a multifaceted approach to tackling prejudice and intolerance. Since its application, the school has also been praised by Ofsted as an “example for other special schools to follow” due to its unique approach to religious education, which builds on pupil’s life experiences and teaches them about a wide range of world faiths and non-faith perspectives.
The panel of judges this year included the RE Council Chair, John Keast. Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain, Chair of the Accord Coalition said: “As this year’s Award highlights, the promotion of inclusion and the growth of mutual understanding can and should be embraced by all schools, and the panel were delighted to recognise the winning schools for their innovative practices and firm commitment to ensuring they promoted and inspired cohesiveness and respect.”
