TRS UK exists to represent academic groups in UK Higher Education Institutions (such as departments or subject areas), and academic societies, whose primary focus is the academic study of religion. It aims to promote, advocate for, and raise public awareness of the academic study of religion, and to facilitate collaboration between its members on matters of common interest.

Contributions to RE

TRS UK is representative and advisory association of professional bodies involved in the academic study of religion. It has members in three categories:

  • Affiliate members: learned societies or professional bodies that have any aspect of the academic study of religion as their primary focus.
  • Institutional members: academic groups (e.g. departments, subject areas or staff clusters) in UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs, as recognized by national funding councils) with research and teaching expertise in the study of religion.
  • Associate members: any academic groups with research and teaching expertise in the study of religion in UK institutions offering degrees validated by UK HEIs.

The purposes of TRS UK are:

  1. To promote and support the academic study of religion in the UK and worldwide;
  2. To advocate for the academic study of religion with government, universities, and other relevant institutions and persons;
  3. To promote co-operation, on matters of common interest and concern, between institutions and learned societies engaged in the academic study of religion in the UK;
  4. To raise public awareness of the academic study of religion;
  5. To promote and publicise high quality research in religious studies, theology and related disciplines in the UK;
  6. To promote high standards in the teaching of religious studies, theology and related disciplines in the UK, particularly in higher education.
